Embracing Solo Travel Safely

Steps to Overcome Your Fears and Keep Safe while Traveling

Stepping out of our comfort zones and embracing the unknown can be intimidating, especially when we consider venturing into unfamiliar territories alone. We struggle with anxiety, stress, overwhelm, fear, you name it!

But don’t worry! With the right mindset and a few practical steps, you can conquer your fear of solo travel and open up a world of incredible experiences. As a seasoned solo traveler whose first solo trip was a 6 hour bus ride in Brazil at the age of 14, I have experienced plenty since to be able to help others get over their fears of solo travel.

So, grab your metaphorical compass and read this list of my top 7 ways to on how to overcome fear and stay safe while solo traveling.

  1. Identify the Root of Your Fear: To effectively overcome any fear, it's essential to understand its origins. Take a moment to reflect on the specific reasons that fuel your fear of solo travel. Are you worried about safety? Anxious about feeling lonely? Concerned about navigating unfamiliar environments? Identifying these underlying fears will allow you to address them head-on and find appropriate solutions. Many times your fears are based on someone else’s experiences or opinions. Once you trace the fear back to its roots and realize that you are not the same as the other person, you will soon notice that the fear dissipates.

  2. Educate Yourself: Knowledge is power, and in the realm of solo travel, it is your greatest ally. Research your intended destination thoroughly. Familiarize yourself with the local customs, traditions, and any safety concerns. Gain insights into transportation options, accommodation choices, and popular tourist spots. Armed with information, you'll feel more confident and prepared for your solo adventure. Hot tip: Create a Google doc with all your research tips and info, so you can access it easy on the road!

  3. Start Small: If the idea of venturing into the world alone feels overwhelming, ease into it gradually. Begin by planning short solo trips to nearby destinations or weekend getaways. These mini-adventures will help you build confidence, adapt to traveling alone, and discover the joys of solo exploration without feeling too far from your comfort zone. This also pertains to eating out solo. It’s much easier to go eat out solo in a neighboring town, than a country across the ocean. Start small, then build up to the bigger trips and experiences.

  4. Connect with the Solo Travel Community: One of the most beautiful aspects of solo travel is the vibrant community that surrounds it. Join online forums, social media groups, and travel communities where solo travelers share their experiences, tips, and advice. Engage with fellow travelers, ask questions, and seek guidance from those who have walked the path before you. Their insights and support can be invaluable in overcoming your fears. I can’t even tell you how many groups I’m a member of. And I’ve met such great friends from these groups that I’m still in contact with to this day because of our shared interests. Search groups online that interest you and join them. (For females I would recommend The Solo Traveler Network, Solo Female Travelers and Girls Who Travel groups on Facebook!

  5. Trust Your Intuition: While it's essential to plan and prepare, don't underestimate the power of your intuition. Intuition serves as an internal compass, guiding us toward what feels right and safe. Trust your instincts when making decisions, from choosing accommodations to interacting with locals. Developing a strong sense of self-awareness and listening to your gut feelings will empower you to make informed choices and navigate through any uncertainties. It will also help to lessen any stress of feeling unsafe. If the neighborhood looks questionable that I’m in, I’m happy to pay more for peace of mind and safety elsewhere.

  6. Embrace the Unknown: Solo travel offers a unique opportunity for self-discovery and personal growth. Embrace the beauty of the unknown and allow yourself to wander without a fixed itinerary. Be open to unexpected encounters, spontaneous adventures, and serendipitous moments. By relinquishing control and embracing the fluidity of solo travel, you'll unlock a world of incredible experiences and create lifelong memories. Things will NEVER go according to plan. There is always a snag somewhere. Sometimes little, sometimes not. Release the need to stick to a specific plan and go with the flow in travel.

  7. Maintain a Positive Mindset: Remember, fear is a natural response to the unknown, but it should never hold you back from experiencing life's wonders. Cultivate a positive mindset and focus on the countless benefits of solo travel—self-reliance, independence, and the freedom to shape your journey according to your desires. Visualize yourself thriving and enjoying every moment, and let that vision fuel your determination to overcome your fears.

By following these steps and embracing the right mindset, you are well on your way to conquering your fear of solo travel. Remember, the world is your playground, waiting to be explored and cherished. So, pack your bags, embark on your solo adventure, and savor the incredible experiences that lie ahead. Trust in yourself, embrace the journey, and let solo travel become a transformative force.
