Why Solo Travel?

Thoughts, tips and benefits of solo traveling

Solo travel can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. It's an opportunity to challenge yourself, step out of your comfort zone, and discover new things about yourself and the world around you. I’ve been traveling solo since I was 14, and traveling fulltime since 2020. I’ve been in scary situations, had incredible unexpected experiences, and been in tears when plans fell through. Either way, I would not change any of it for the world.

Here are just a few of the many benefits of why I think you should travel solo:

1. Freedom and flexibility

When you travel solo, you have complete freedom and flexibility to do what you want, when you want. You don't have to compromise with anyone else on what sights to see, where to eat, or how to spend your time. You can change your plans on a whim and go wherever your heart desires. This sense of freedom can be incredibly liberating and empowering. This was a game changer for me, as I’m very adventurous. I will climb mountains and jump in lakes and veer off the road on a whim. Sometimes that doesn’t sit well if you’re with others. But if you’re by yourself, it doesn’t matter!

2. Self-discovery

Traveling solo allows you to spend time with yourself and reflect on your life. It's an opportunity to step out of your daily routine and gain a new perspective on your priorities and values. You may discover new interests, passions, or even a sense of purpose. Solo travel can be a transformative experience that helps you grow as a person. It also helps you understand who you are by yourself, without the opinions and judgments of others. It builds confidence in yourself and respect for others.

3. Meeting new people

One of the great things about traveling solo is that you're more likely to meet new people than if you were with a companion. When you're alone, you're more approachable and open to making new connections. You may meet locals who can offer you insider tips on the best places to visit, or fellow travelers who share your interests and passions. These connections can be incredibly enriching and may even lead to lifelong friendships. I’ve met friends that I’m still in contact with today in coffee shops, on tours, in restaurants and hotels. Be open to meeting others, and it will happen!

4. Building confidence

Traveling solo can be a huge confidence boost. You'll have to navigate unfamiliar places, communicate with people who speak different languages, and make decisions on your own. These challenges can be daunting at first, but as you overcome them, you'll develop a sense of confidence and self-assurance that will serve you well in all areas of your life. What’s more is that you soon realize you are definitely not the only going going through this. Others are traveling solo and experiencing the same things you are but in your own way. Then you realize we’re all in this together.

5. Creating unforgettable memories

Finally, traveling solo is a great way to create unforgettable memories. When you're alone, every experience is amplified. You'll remember the sights, sounds, and smells of a place more vividly. You'll have stories to tell that will make you laugh and reminisce for years to come. Solo travel can be an adventure that you'll cherish for the rest of your life. Take lots of photos that are remembrances of your favorite places. Like the famous quote says, “I’d rather spend my money on memories than things.”

I don’t know if I’ll ever stop traveling solo. Now that I’m more used to that instead of traveling with a partner, I don’t foresee myself stopping at all in my lifetime. Sure there are drawbacks like loneliness, safety issues and language barriers. But take these challenges as an opportunity to learn, to get out of your comfort zone, to evolve and discover new things about yourself and the world around you, and create unforgettable memories.
